Sadaebu(士大夫) in the Joseon Dynasty refers to scholars who gained government posts. Here, sa means ‘scholar’ and daebu means ‘government position.’ The exhibition consists of a section for sa and a section for daebu in order to show how a scholar becomes a government official. In the section for sa, scholars’ garments and their paraphernalia are displayed, The Illustrated Guide to the Five Relations(五倫行實圖) reflecting scholars’ values, an ink-wash orchid painting, and wood furnitures give a hint of the character of those who used such objects. In the daebu section, there are quotidian objects once used by government officials to dress themselves up and the typical work outfits of civil and military officers.
This exhibition would provide audiences with an opportunity to better understand the life, value and dignity of the scholars and government officials in the past.
