Hair styles
reflect an age’s characteristics. A hair style modified and evolved in accord with
social situations can manifest people’s thought and the situations of the time.
In the late Joseon period, women decorated their chignon by employing a variety
of ways. As a result, hair knickknacks such as ornamental hairpins(binyeo,
cheopji, chignon accessory, dwiggoji and pig-tale ribbons)
developed.
Cultural
exchanges between Joseon period Korea and Japan in the Edo era through envoys
brought similar yet distinct cultures. Common culture for example was a corner
stone in developing the two nation’s traditional culture, and continues even
today. Joseon women tended to their beauty and presence through hairstyles and
hair ornamentation, and this tendency was similar to Edo women. This exhibition
features women’s hair decoration, and provides an opportunity to examine two
countries’ cultural background, and women’s thoughts on beauty. Supported by Coreana Cosmetics, Co., Ltd.
